Benefits To Adding Honey To Your Day

Do you keep a jar of honey in your workspace? Maybe you should!

Honey is commonly known for its sweet delicious taste. Honey can vary in color by its processing method of raw versus pasteurized and can vary greatly in pricing, but this thick, sticky substance has many added benefits than just its delicious taste. In fact, the benefits of raw honey have been around since ancient times.

I always find it interesting that when it comes to health, many of the things that have existed long, long ago come with the most benefits for our health!

So, what benefits does honey have besides just adding sweetness to our tea?

ENERGY

Everybody wants more energy, but did you know adding some honey to your morning can increase your energy level? Honey is loaded with methylglyoxal compound, which is known to boost energy levels. In fact, not only your energy but enhance your immune system by stimulating the growth of cytokines.

BURNS

“A review published in The Cochrane Library indicated that honey might be able to help heal burns. The lead author of the study said that "topical honey is cheaper than other interventions, notably oral antibiotics, which are often used and may have other deleterious side effects."

DIABETES

Honey is proven to not increase the sugar in the bloodstream when added to tea, oatmeal or taken for other uses. This means honey is a safe and healthy sweetener for diabetics to enjoy compared to other artificial sweeteners.  It is also said to reduce fasting serum glucose maintain fasting C-peptide, a compound that stabilizes insulin.

ALLERGIES & COLDS
Honey is found to help relieve the respiratory system including common ailments of asthma, allergies, and colds. We all know that coughing is not enjoyable, along with wheezing or troubled breathing, which are all commonly caused by mucus. Honey helps to soothe the mucus membranes found in the airways and helps reduce the build-up of mucus.

Also, since honey is produced by honey bees, which uses pollen to create the honey, research has found that adding honey, from your local area to your daily intake can help with common allergies.

FIGHTING INFECTIONS

Recent studies have found that honey has the amazing ability to kill bacteria. In fact, a recent study in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases showed Manuka honey can prevent the bacteria Clostridium difficile, most commonly known as C. Diff, and causes severe diarrhea and sickness.

Manuka honey may even help reverse bacterial resistance to antibiotics!

PREVENTING ACID REFLUX

It is not uncommon to experience acid reflux, but the use of honey can reduce the risk of inflammation, acid reflux, heartburn, and GERD. The upward flow of stomach acid and undigested food can be reduced with honey.

Honey includes many more added benefits because of its anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties. This includes benefits for skin, hair and even weight loss. Honey is something to add to any recipe, tea, or even just enjoying by the spoonful!

One thing we must note with honey is that it is not considered safe to give to a child under one years old due to it containing botulinum, a bacteria unsafe for consumption in a very young child with lack of developed gut health to fight against the bacteria.
